Temperament and protection

Risk, fees, inflation and people who want your money.

Markets are weather. Fees are termites. Scams are a locked door you should have checked. A beginner who understands those three will outpace a beginner who memorised a hot ticker.

Volatility is not the only risk

A global equity fund can fall 20% or more in a bad year and still be a reasonable long-term holding. The danger is selling it there. Sequence risk — a crash just as you start withdrawing — is why money needed in the next few years should not be in shares.

Inflation is quieter and more reliable. Cash that cannot fall still falls in what it will buy. A decade of 3% inflation removes about a quarter of the real value, before tax.

Fees compound too

A 1% extra annual fee on a 5% return is not a fifth of your growth in pound terms over a long horizon; it is more, because the lost 1% never compounds. Prefer clean, published OCFs and platform tariffs. Exit penalties, foreign-exchange mark-ups and paper-statement fees are still fees.

Before you send a penny

  • Search the firm on the FCA Register. No record, no transfer.
  • Cold calls about investments are banned in the UK. Hang up. Look the number up yourself.
  • Guaranteed high returns, urgency, and secrecy are the classic three. You do not need a fourth.
  • Clone sites copy real brands. Check the URL character by character. Bookmark the real one.
  • Crypto, unlisted minnows and overseas brokers are not a beginner ISA. Different legal world, different losses.
  • If someone needs remote access to your device to help you invest, it is not help.

FSCS, in plain English

Cash in a UK-authorised bank, building society or credit union is generally protected up to £85,000 per person per institution (and £170,000 jointly) if the firm fails. Some temporary high-balance cover exists for specific life events.

Investments held in a nominee account with an authorised firm are client assets: if the platform fails, the assets should be returned. If they cannot be, FSCS investment protection can apply, currently up to £85,000. FSCS does not pay you because a fund fell in value. Market loss is yours.

Peer-to-peer, many overseas entities, and e-money wallets have different or thinner cover. Read the specific scheme, not a screenshot from a forum.

How much to invest

Only money that can stay invested through a nasty year. If a 30% paper fall would force you to sell, the amount is too high or the horizon is too short.

Home-country comfort

A UK current account plus a UK ISA plus a FTSE fund is still a lot of Britain. Global funds exist so you do not have to bet on one island's decade.

Advice versus education

A regulated financial adviser can be worth paying if your estate, pension or tax position is messy. Education sites, including this one, cannot replace that.
